Subjective & Objective Claims

Subjective Claim: a claim that is neither true or false, but based on a person's beliefs, morals, or feelings.

Example: My mother would always assume when I am on the computer that I am playing games or chatting to my friends. However, most of the times I am working on homework for my classes. She doesn't realize how integrated computers have become in our education and always assume the worst.

Objective Claim: a claim that can be either true or false more of a general point of view.

Example: I am the tallest person in class.
This claim can be true or false. It is an objective claim because the height can differ each day. Also, it could not account for hair, age, or other things that may make the measurement inaccurate.

I found this topic to be very helpful for me in the future when I have to write an argument. It shows me there are more than one way of presenting an argument.

  1. Hey I like your subjective claim example because the same thing is always happening to me! I spend most of my day during the semester doing online classes, looking up information for tests, doing research papers, yet my mom is always complaining (really loudly too), that all I do is play video games. I mean it is so frustrating, because when I do play a video game for like 30mins out of my day, all I hear is "see I told you, why are you wasting your time DOING THAT". Then after this she gets my dad involved and I get lectured. Also your comment about computers being integrated into our education is very dead on. When studying I often go to the computer before I look in the text, and I usually get the right answer. Also I feel that I learn a lot more, covering many subject areas, than I do taking a class and reading a text book.
